The Inspector General Of Police just declared that recording officers while carrying out their duty according to law in an inappropriate manners will not be acceptable, anyone caught doing it with face the law.
Here is the full verified information of what the Inspector General Of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu, said meeting with the Crime Correspondents Association Of Nigeria at the Police Resource Center in Abuja, the IGP formerly addressed the critical trending issue of citizen journalism and police handling.
The IGP expressed deep concern over what he called the growing trend of social media users recording police officers during both routine and sensitive activities without proper context. He cautioned that public engagement must be handled responsibly and should not be weaponized to harassing officers who are risking their lives to maintain safety.
A major point raised by the general was the active recycling of old or edited video clips falsely presented as recent incidents.
According to him, this specific practice fuels misinformation, triggers public anxiety, and damages the image of the county. He noted that while accountability is highly valued, it shouldn’t demoralize the troops on the frontlines.
Just few weeks before the announcing, the Police officially affirmed that citizens do have right to a legal right to record interactions with law enforcement agencies.
